The Space:
A recent gut renovation transformed this previously dark, seasonal, rustic getaway, into an airy year round escape with all the modern comforts, while retaining some of the adventurous “cabin in the woods” vibes. The last cabin (with power) on a dead end lane, the house is set overlooking the rocky headwaters of the Neversink River, and the blissful audio of water tumbling over smooth stones is honestly one of the truly restorative features of the property.
Drama has been injected into the living space with the addition of windows throughout the room (and, in fact, the whole house), including two tiers of windows that reach up into the gable, bathing it in ever-changing light. Counterpoint to the preponderance of whitewashed shiplap paneling, the wall surrounding the soaring river rock fireplace remains clad in rough cut pine, harking back to its rustic origins. A fireplace insert allows for cozy fires that both add to the ambience, while supplementing the ample heating at the house.
For a small kitchen, this one has a lot of counter space, and a five burner gas stove is ready for your culinary ambitions. It should have most of the accoutrements you need.
The bedroom has a bank of windows that look out over the back deck and down at the Neversink. It is a heck of a way to wake up. (There are no window coverings, so please bring blinders if you’re sensitive to light). A pocket door opens to the modern bathroom, with a tiled, walk-in shower. This bathroom also opens to the living room.
Steep stairs lead to the loft, which is partially enclosed by the rustic texture of the chimney stones, and which also benefits from the relaxing sounds of the river when the window is open in summer. (Note: These stairs are not safe for young children, so please use caution when deciding if this house is right for you.)
The Pine House is a screened-in porch, steps from the cabin, and is a multi-use magnet during the warmer months. It looks down over the sizable fire pit and the river beyond, and includes a dining table and uber-comfy sectional that will call you for naps, even if you’re not a napper.
The wraparound deck offers sunny and shade spots, whichever is your preference, with the rear portion overlooking the water.
The river is a source of calm and of incredible beauty, no matter the time of year. The sun rises such that it casts a magical light down the open water, just as you awaken, so you may find yourself drawn to its banks with your coffee. You may even catch a glimpse of an eagle that frequently flies through, scouring the water for small native brook trout, no doubt. There is a delightful, if freezing, swimming hole (a plunge pool, really), approximately 5 feet deep in summer, depending on rains, by a small waterfall. The water is crystal clear and cooling off there will be a memory you’ll hold dear.
