Hickory House History
This house is one of the most unique properties in Delaware. A simple look around will tell you that this is not a conventional build, moreover it is a completely custom hand-built home.
Its history begins in the mid 1980’s with the clearing of many acres of farmland in Maine. The collection of Hickory, Wormy Chestnut, and Locust timbers would in time become a realized dream for New England farmer Patrick Hunter.
The wood was painstakingly cut, debarked, cut and hand notched to later become the skeletal structure of a typical New England “salt box” cottage. It took Patrick over 12 years to hand cut, notch, every beam in this home. In 1998 the numbered beams were loaded on to 4 semi-trucks and hauled to its current location. Patrick now 63 years of age and his older brother Mike began their 3-day odyssey of assembling the current structure. The huge hickory beams are all mortise and tenon joints with locust pegs. There are but 2 dozen spikes(nails) in the entire framing along the ridge beam. The rim joists and floor beams are dove tailed to the vertical beams. The wide plank floors are also dove tailed along the perimeters. The house also boasts a vintage standing seam metal roof as well as matching she shed. The outer covering of choice just had to be traditional cedar shakes. The lack of a solid ceiling or insulation between upper and lower floors allows for the perfect convective air flow between floors. Patrick did not get to enjoy his dream for very long as his young life was tragically cut short by cancer after only 3 years in his hand-built cottage.
Situated on over 1/2 acre, so plenty of yard for kids to play in. The home has received some significant upgrades over the years including removing the old school baseboard heating in favor of a more modern heat pump\ac unit. In keeping with the industrial look of the interior the ductwork for the upstairs was left exposed. A whole house water filtration system was added as well
The cottage served a Va. family as a vacation home from the early 2000’s until it was purchased by its current owners in 2021.
